Union fighting to keep some MTA workers on the job

S/O to the always intrepid reporter Greg Mocker of PIX 11 News for shining a much-needed light on this crucial issue. This is the crux of the matter, in a nutshell, the MTA is hellbent on removing the vital presence of transit workers from the deepest train stations in the entire system, the 168th, 181st and 191st 1 Train stations and Union Local 100 is fighting desperately to hold the line.

The Uptown Collective believes that our Uptown train stations should be staffed by transit workers around the clock as they have been for decades now. To remove them and reassign them elsewhere is an affront. The union is asking commuters to call 212-878-7448 to demand the workers stay in the stations but we have tried the number several times without any success.

My dad likes to refer to Father’s Day as “El Día de los Perros” (The Day of the Dogs) because fathers, he says, don’t get the same kind of love and respect as mothers do. With that said, TODAY, we are shining a well-deserved light on some amazing fathers. Arise Teen Summer Program

The Arise Teen Summer Program is a Summer enrichment program for high school students presented by Boys and Girls Club of Harlem and the West Harlem Development Corporation. Includes $1300 stipend (participant must complete program). Priority for CB9 residents. 

This summer, in the six week program from July 5-August 11, students will participate in a variety of activities and workshops in culinary arts, coding, urban farming, real estate, and more. With the guidance from experts in various fields, students will get a well rounded foundation in workforce development.

NYC, Rank Your Vote This June

Early Voting for the June 27 Primary has begun familia. This Primary will feature Rank Choice Voting.

To vote in the June Primary, you must be registerd to vote by June 17th; then, you can either vote during the early voting period between June 17th-June 25th or on Election Day, June 27th.

You can also request an absentee ballot; the deadline to request an absentee ballot online is Monday, June 12th, and in person is Monday, June 26th. The deadline to postmark your absentee ballot is Tuesday, June 27th.

10 Talks Tech @ The Schomburg Center

The 10 Talks Tech conference, sponsored by Community Board 10, the NAACP and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, held at the venerable Schomburg Center on June 10 was a rousing success. Folks came from all over Uptown and beyond for an entire day of programming that was all about empowering Harlem’s future with technology. Our founder, Led Black, was selected as a panelist for a super relevant panel about Tech and Activism. Many thanks to the 2nd Vice Chair of Community Board 10 Charles F. Johnson for inviting us and for doing an outstanding job of moderating the panel that we participated in.

Artist explores freedom and industry | Manhattan Times News

What do winged angels, ancient Assyrian temple gods and Dominican activists have in common?

All turn up in the work of visual artist Moses Ros is an architect by training and a print-maker by vocation. His work is appearing in four simultaneous shows across the U.S.: the Riverfront Art Gallery in Yonkers, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas and Alianza Dominicana in Washington Heights.

In the new project “Deconstructed Anatomies,” which opens Thursday, Aug. 4, in Yonkers, Ros’ work was inspired by art from the eighth century B.C. The ancient Mesopotamian city of Nimrud, located in modern-day Iraq, contained a palace built for King Ashurnasirpal II. The palace walls featured stone carvings of Lamassu – celestial winged lions with human heads. They were powerful deities protecting the royal Assyrian compound.
