After a powerhouse of a year for Uptown in 2011, Mike Fitelson is setting the tone early for an even more magnificent year for the neighborhood in 2012 with his North Manhattan as Muse photo exhibit that will have it’s debut and opening reception tomorrow at the NoMAA gallery (178 Bennett @ 189th Street). More than just an exhibit of photos, North Manhattan as Muse is a moving, expansive and interactive tribute to Uptown and the artists that have been inspired by it.

Here are just a few of the folks that are featured in this groundbreaking exhibit; Lin-Manuel Miranda, Michael Diaz aka Juan Bago, Jon Michaud, Jonathan Ullman, Dister, Audubon, Frankie P, Sky Pape, Hector Canonge and Elisa Gore among many others. The exhibit features striking photographs of the individual artists alongside an essay and will include artwork – paintings, video clips, music, and ephemera – from each of the artists.

Curated by the capable and celebrated artist in her own right, Andrea Arroyo, the exhibit has a narrative flow that takes you on a journey through the textures, sights and sounds of Uptown Manhattan and culminates with the NYC Salt mini-exhibit in the last room of the NoMAA Gallery. For those that don’t know, NYC Salt is a not for profit program that prepares local teens for college and careers in photography. To end the exhibit with the work of tomorrow’s photographers is a fitting end to an artistic experience that not only takes into account what has come before but also, wisely, plants seeds for what comes next.

Opening reception: Thursday Jan. 5, 2012, 6-8pm.
