An Uptown Portrait: Linwood

An Uptown Portrait is a bi-monthly photo series by journalist Amaris Castillo (@AmarisCastillo). The portraits capture those who reside in upper Manhattan and their candid quips on their side of town.

Linwood Lee Holley III stands in front of a gate by the front of Lenox Stop 1 Supermarket, on the corner of 132nd St. and Lenox Ave. His attention is engaged on a deli sandwich, but the 48-year-old puts it down for a photograph. He walks over to the front of the supermarket and squints at the camera, the sunlight reflecting off his glasses. Holley III says he’s a military veteran. The U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. He lists them all. Born and raised in Virginia, he moved to New York City in 1985, then Harlem six years later. For every photograph shot, Holley puts his hands on his chest and looks at the camera almost solemnly. When asked why he lives in Harlem, he mentions the government.
