I remember thinking when I first read Drown, damn Junot Díaz is a genius. Well, he is now officially a genius. Earlier this week, the MacArthur Foundation announced their 2012 MacArthur Fellows and the immensely talented Mr. Díaz was one of the recipients. On top of joining a select group of pioneers and luminaries across many fields, the beneficiaries receive a $500,000 no-strings attached grant. The good news for Junot fans is that it seems that he will now dive head first into creating his post-apocalyptic DR novel. An excerpt of the book entitled Monstro appeared in the Sci-Fi edition of the New Yorker earlier this summer and caused quite a stir.

BTW, Junot will be at the 92 Y with Julie Otsuka on Monday, December 17th. While that seems like a long way away, the tickets will sell out fast, so get yours ASAP. Uptown Collective readers get a 50% discount on select tickets by using the UPTOWN promo code.
