Irina Falconi, who is playing at the United States Open this year, will write posts throughout the tournament for Straight Sets. She has her own tumblr page, and can be followed on Twitter. On Tuesday, she lost in three sets to Olga Puchkova in the first round of the women’s singles competition.

And the beat goes on.

Currently listening to Katy Perry’s new song “Wide Awake.” Very fitting for the current situation. Don’t worry, I’ll get there.

Once again, it was bound to be an epic match. Maria Sanchez and I were to play on one of the biggest tennis stages in the world, against the fourth-seeded Nadia Petrova and Maria Kirilenko.

The first set went just as we planned: we got bageled, which means we lost, 6-0. Yup, had them right where we wanted them.

During the changeover, we went ahead and ate our cream cheese everything bagel, and decided that we’d give the crowd what they wanted. From there on, we played some good tennis. We won the second set, 7-5. We were ready to go for the third one. And we did. We had a chance, but the No. 4 seeds used their experience and stepped it up a level. But hey, no worries. We got 160 points from our first-round win, and a little cash. Not a bad week.
