Irina Falconi, who will be playing at the United States Open this year, will write posts throughout the tournament for Straight Sets. She has her own tumblr page, and can be followed on Twitter.

I’ve been thinking about a solid introduction to my first New York Times blog all morning but haven’t really found something that has stuck. But the thing about being a creative/abstract/silly writer — you have options. Options are good. O.K., I hope you enjoyed that intro.

My name is Irina Falconi. Professional tennis player who is competing in this year’s United States Open. I’m also an avid blogger and writer. I am also a part-time comic and fortune teller. No joke.

One of the other reasons I got this gig is because I am an original New Yorker. I grew up in Inwood and went to one of the best public middle schools in New York City, the Mott Hall School in Harlem. I was a 10-year-old taking the train alone at 7 a.m., and taking it back at around 4 o’clock. No big deal.
