When Broadway composer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda needed inspiration for a song for “Bring It On,” his new musical about high-school cheerleading, he turned to the bedroom he slept in as a teenager. He didn’t have to travel far—he lives just five blocks away from his childhood home in Manhattan’s Inwood neighborhood.

“I locked myself in my old room and stayed up all night and wrote [the lyrics to the song “One Perfect Moment”] like I was writing a tormented diary entry,” Miranda said.

Now the composer of “In the Heights” is putting the finishing touches on “Bring It On” before the show opens on Broadway Aug. 1. The show is based on the successful 2000 movie of the same name, starring Kirsten Dunst.
