It’s been more than 40 years since Barbara LeGrand, 77, arrived in Brooklyn from her native island of Curacao on a snowy November day.
But the longtime Washington Heights resident, a retired home health aide, said she never applied for U.S. citizenship, in part because of the $680 fee.
Now, thanks to the largest CUNY Citizen NOW! Campaign event ever, LeGrand filed a request to have that fee waived and finally completed an application for naturalization.
“I’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” she said. “Now, I have the opportunity.”
