The dynamic upper Manhattan neighbourhoods of Inwood and Washington Heights have undergone a dramatic shift in recent years, as the once predominantly Irish population has been replaced by new arrivals from the Dominican Republic and other Spanish-speaking countries.
Barbara Cronin has owned the Irish Brigade bar for 28 years, and it is now one of the last Irish pubs in the neighbourhood.
For Saint Patrick’s Day, she spoke to the BBC about the changes in the area and about her nostalgia for the days when, as she quipped, you could not rent an apartment if you did not have an Irish accent.
