Skyscrapers in the Hood?

BY Led Black (@Led_Black)

The Manhattan Times, DNAinfo and now Curbed have been spreading the word on the proposed new building project that would bring, at most, 4 skyscrapers to the area around 190th Street and Broadway. Quadriad Realty Partners, the real estate developer behind the project, has in mind four new mix-used buildings that would be between 23 and 42 stories in height and would completely alter the Uptown skyline. What are your thoughts? Is this a good thing or bad thing for Uptown?

Not sure if I missed this, but what would be the purpose of this building? I say the negative aspect of this addition would be if this is a beginning of a new trend that will remove the culture of uptown.

Honestly, I only see negative coming from it. Visually it would be horrible. It will probably make Inwood much more crowded than it has to be. It would definitely speed up gentrification.
All in all, I don’t like it.

Being an Architect, I am not against development of our neighborhoods but it needs to be responsibly done. A 42 story building in this location is not the right thing to do. It will open a Pandora’s box of huge towers and the neighborhood will be irrevocably transformed. Light and air will disappear and the density of the neighborhood will increase. Increased density does create demand which means that new businesses can thrive but the scale of these buildings is completely inappropriate to this location. There is also a huge slope here which means that a 42 story building will actually be higher relative to the buildings on the low end of the slope. The buildings will also probably be badly designed. So many of the new developer financed buildings in the city are designed without much thought but to the bottom line. How great it would be to have a team working on this site that might think outside the box a little and seriously consider the impact their buildings might make on the street, how they might alter or enrich the texture of the neighborhood, the light, the traffic, etc. There are exceptions to the rule of banal developer buildlngs in the city of course but I doubt this will be one of them. I would seriously urge the community to take an active role in making sure that whatever gets built here is an asset to the neighborhood.
